Toronto, Ontario - Map Update Request

Hello Editors,

My request pertains to the following segment:

https://waze.com/editor?env=usa&lat=43.64442&lon=-79.39644&zoomLevel=18&segments=68279679

I believe this parking lot road should be removed from the map.

The segment covers an alleyway used for private parking and pedestrian access to businesses. With many bars/restaurants in the area, drivers are frequently routed along the segment to pick up and drop off passengers at King Street. The one-lane wide alleyway becomes incredibly congested, with drivers fighting to enter/leave while navigating around parked cars and pedestrians.

Since the destination of these drivers is the segment itself, no routing penalty is applied. Additionally, automatically detected traffic jams are not highlighted.

Ultimately, I believe the segment reduces safety and degrades the navigation experience of Waze users.

Thanks!

Hello

Thank you for the post.

Unfortunately, our standard is to map alleys and lanes that provide access to exclusive-use parking for venues or homes. This segment matches this standard as there are multiple parking spots that are exclusive.

I can absolutely respect that this is not the answer you were looking for, and I agree it’s not great to have people routed to it. What we can do is route people to the street instead of the parking lot segment.

At the same time, it would be more effective for the land owner to have signage such as below. The streetview from 2023 shows no signage advising drivers that they should not enter this alley, that it is one way, a dead end, etc. The only signage is small and in relation to parking.

Below is signage that could be very effective, as not all drivers use Waze

I will let others chime in,

Agreed with @CoolCanuck. The problem is that drivers are navigating into the alleyway causing congestion. If they are rideshare drivers then that’s a problem with those drivers and the riders setting the pickup point to that alley. They should set it to King St or Wellington if they want picked up. I would be upset as a rideshare driver if they put me up that alley so I have to turn around or reverse out.

Since there are businesses there with parking available for those places, the parking lot road is legit. If there is a businesses along King that are getting routed to the back of the lot then the proper fix here is to create the businesses in Waze and set the stop point to King.
