The last six months or so some strange URs have appeared in Ghana and in the Atlantic Ocean near equator.
The reporters are typically Spanish speaking from the language setting “Español (A. Latina)”, “Español” or Portuguese “BR Português” or “Português (Portugal)”.
Near the equator I found a whole bunch of URs reported:
Here you find 162(!) map update requests, URs, congested just in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, outside any country:

Hello @CuttySpark,
Thank you for raising this issue, I have filed an internal ticket to investigate it. I will let you know once we have any updates on that.
All the best,
Olesya
Thank you @CuttySpark for all these examples, that’s very helpful indeed. I have updated the internal ticket accordingly.
Best regards,
Olesya
Another observation: It seems all reports are reported by iOS or CarPlay users.
There are also 16 more URs to be found: https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lat=-0.20000&lon=1.28333&zoomLevel=20&mapUpdateRequest=23668934&tab=issue_tracker
Very insightful! Thank you @CuttySpark! I’ll add this information to our internal ticket.
Yes, it was closed by staff; I have added this UR to the internal case as well.
I have looked a bit into the distances between some of the reports. The reports in the ocean seems to be spaced in a grid by one nautical mile, which is 1852 m.
Further north in Ghana, we have reports along two GPS traces. And the distance between the traces is about 1826 metres measured with a road segment. This happens to correspond to the distance between two meridians 1852 m apart at the equator. At 9.97° latitude I calculate the the distance to 1824 m.

Funny.
